"Keeping
the busy professional informed"
Welcome to the 2010
September edition of The Quintessential Brief. We've well and
truly rolled into the new financial year, and it's good to see
that we're also slowly rolling into warmer weather and sunnier
days.
Financially speaking,
we are anticipating some changes within the industry in light of
the recent election, though exactly what changes will be
employed remains to be seen. In other financial news; we look at
the Income Tax reforms invoked by the ATO over the recent months
that may impact on your 2009/2010 Tax Return as well as examine
the rules governing Payroll Tax and the associated grouping
provisions.This quarter in legal
news, we'll be looking at the laws involved in workplace
bullying, and the protocol associated with receiving letters of
statutory demand – specifically the course of action open to
those who wish to dispute a statutory demand.
Richard Carter, a
telecommunications consultant from Business Connections gives
some advice to Small Business owners on the major telephony
options currently available, and how to make the right
telecommunications decision for your business. We also examine
how the Small Business sector has recovered from the GFC, and
how the outlook for Small Business is shaping up for the next
two years.Clarity Marketing has
included some guidance on managing your domain name as part of
your online marketing plan; which gives an insight into some of
the aspects of online marketing that are often forgotten. We
also discuss the advantages associated with direct mail outs and
how they can assist you in achieving a number of your marketing
goals.
We hope that you find
the information contained in The Quintessential Brief
beneficial. If there are any legal, tax, accounting or small
business issues that you would like us to address in future

The Basics of
Payroll Tax and Grouping Provisions
Many businesses are required to pay Payroll Tax to the Office of
State Revenue (OSR). Payroll Tax is a state-based tax imposed on
wages that are paid or payable in the relevant state. Wages
includes most payments for services made by an employer to
employees, directors and contract workers who are deemed to be
employees.

Bullying in the
Workplace
Bullying is any type
of behaviour, or series of behaviours, that unfairly or
unreasonably puts down, belittles, undermines, controls, abuses,
scares, intimidates, excludes, offends or embarrasses someone.
It is often quietly withstood by the victim because they aren’t
certain that the experience constitutes bullying, or they don’t
know their legal rights. Some important facts to remember about
workplace bullying are outlined in our article:

Setting Aside a
Statutory Demand
A statutory demand is a written demand made against a debtor
company to pay its debt to the issuing creditor. Section 459E of
the Corporations Act 2001 provides that a creditor may serve a
company with a statutory demand for a debt (or debts) due and
payable (the total of which must exceed $2,000). It allows a
creditor to exercise its right to demand payment without the
need to commence legal proceedings.

Telecommunications for SME's
More
Choice - Lower Cost - More Complexity
Richard Carter
There can be no
disputing that over the past two decades the range of
telecommunications services available to business has blossomed.
At the same time, the cost of these services has plummeted.
Whilst this is very good news for business, it also has its
challenges. The complexity of the choices has grown and even one
of the oldest forms of telecommunications – telephone lines –
has a wide range of options available. The five major types of
telephony service available are as follows:

One Year
on from the GFC - How SME
Owners are Feeling
Small to medium enterprises (SMEs) were one of the hardest hit
sectors during the Global Financial Crisis; and though there are
signs of a solid return to growth and improved business
performance, there is still a certain fragility attached to
their confidence.
Recently a number of reports have been released regarding the
state of SMEs and business confidence, and some of the
significant findings include:

FREE Tax Record Kit & Business Tax
Checklist
The new financial year
brings with it significant changes to the tax system. With new
exemptions being introduced, a multitude of perplexing figures
and overwhelming paper work, it is understandable how tax time
can become very confusing for tax payers. Generally speaking,
anyone who earns over the tax free threshold during the course
of a financial year, 1 July - 30 June, is required to submit an
individual tax return to the Australian Tax Office.
In order to simplify
the tax system and the processes involved in completing your
individual tax return, The Quinn Group has introduced the FREE
Tax Record Kit. The easy step by step guide will help you to
gather all of the information and documents required to prepare
your tax return.
Simply complete the tax record kit, send it
back and for a fixed fee we will take care of the rest for you. Quinns has also
catered to its business clients by introducing the FREE Business
Checklist. This is a comprehensive checklist of all the things
you need to take into account while preparing for your business’
tax return. It is a means of simplifying what quite often
becomes a complicated, stressful and time consuming part of the
year for many business owners.
Here at The Quinn
Group we work hard to ensure that our tax clients are aware of
what they can and cannot claim on their returns and we work with
you to legally minimise the amount of tax that you are required
to pay. For more information or to claim your FREE Tax Record
Kit or Business Checklist visit our website
www.quinns.com.au to
submit an online enquiry. Alternatively call us on 1300 QUINNS
(784 667) to book an appointment.

Celebrations!
This quarter at
Quinns we bid farewell to Steph, our marketing and client
services coordinator and Ella from accounts. The team gathered
to say goodbye at The Grand Hotel, just around the corner from
our City office. We enjoyed drinks, a few laughs and some
delicious snacks. At the same
time we welcomed our newest staff member, Lauren. Last quarter
also marked another birthday for one of our Senior Accountants,
Fiona, pictured here with Michael and Christine. Fiona, like a
fine wine, you just keep getting better with every passing year!

The best thing about
being an Office Manager is... |
It is never boring. There is always something new or
different to do. |

I love coming to the
office everyday because... |
Same answer as
above! Also, my coworkers are a great bunch of people,
it is always a pleasure to be around and work with them. |
|
When I am not at the
office my favourite thing to do is... |
Relaxing and spending time with friends and family. |
|
On my next holiday I
am going... |
Camping at Kangaroo Valley. |
|
On my last holiday I went to... |
The Cook
Islands, it was amazing. The friendly people and relaxed

Name of your business?
Vision
Lifestyle Projects Pty Ltd |
|
What does your business do?
VISION Lifestyle Projects Pty Limited (“VISION”)
provides guidance and support to developers and owners
of retirement villages to ensure that their products
achieve optimum results in the short and long term,
through preliminary concept development, design,
marketing and sales, provision of management systems and
training or general support.
|
|
How long have you been operating?
7 years |
|
What distinguishes your business from your competitors
VISION is a values-based business. We are quite
selective in who we work with. Ultimately retirement
villages are about the people living in them and it is
important to us that our clients work towards that end.
VISION understands the evolving needs and aspirations of
the residents living in retirement villages and the
importance of “future proofing” a development. |
|
When I started this business I wished I'd known...
The most difficult thing in coming from a larger
business to a small one was that it was necessary to get
back on the tools. This distracts from the strategic
aspects of building a business but was essential if we
were to create a solid basis to move forward from. With
the foundations now in place we can give greater focus
to strategy and growth. |
|
Best business advice anyone has given you?
An early mentor constantly reminded me of “the art of
the possible”. Balancing idealism with realism is often
quite difficult. He spoke about how it was important to
have dreams but they also needed to be achievable. |
|
What do you think the key to your success has been to
date?
We have always held to our core values of balancing
competing interests through culture, learning,
improvement and appraisal.
